New Patients

The first appointment is very important to us. Our goal is to create a fun, supportive, non-fearful, and caring environment that allows your child to develop a positive and healthy outlook on dentistry and oral health. Parents play an important role in getting children started with a good attitude toward dental care. One of the use things you can do to help is to be completely natural and easygoing when you tell your child about their appointment. Be positive. This approach enable children to view their dental visit as an enjoyable opportunity to stay healthy. Children are often at ease once they enter our kid-friendly environment where toys, games and movies abound.

However, many parents wonder if their child will cooperate at an early age. We do not expect young children to be perfect. While young children may cry, we are specially trained to handle the situation with encouragement, tenderness and kindness. You should plan your first dental visit shortly after the eruption of your child’s first tooth and no later than the first birthday. At this age, we consider this a “well baby” exam. While the child is in your lap, we will examine the teeth and gums and perform a “toothbrush cleaning” to remove plaque from their teeth and gums, We will show you how to thoroughly clean your child’s teeth as well. For older children, necessary x-rays may be taken. Parent cooperation is vital in developing good habits; we will discuss proper and regular brushing and good diet choices for your child. We will intruduce other preventative measures based the findings of the examination of your child’s teeth and gums. We will discuss thumb and pacifier habits. We also provide orthodontic screenings and make recommendations for early orthodontic care if bite problems are present. We will be happy to discuss any specific concerns you have regarding your child’s oral health.

What To Expect on the First Visit

Patience and calm on your part will help ensure a successful and stress-free visit for your child. Schedule the appointment as early as possible in the day, when your child is alert and fresh.

The typical first dental appointment for your child could include one or more of the following:

  • A gentle but thorough examination of the teeth, jaw, bite, gums, and oral tissues to monitor growth and development and observe any problem areas.
  • If needed, a gentle cleaning, which includes polishing teeth and removing any plaque, tartar build-up, and stains.
  • X-rays
  • A demonstration of proper dental hygiene.
  • Assessment of the need for fluoride.

Ask our office if you can take your child on a tour of the dental office in advance of your appointment. This will create a sense of familiarity when the real appointment rolls around. Before your child’s dental visit, ask us about the procedures to expect so there are no surprises. Talk to your child about what to expect, and build excitement as well as understanding about the upcoming visit. Bring with you to the appointment any records of your child`s complete medical history.
